10 Books on My Fall Reading List - Top Ten Tuesday

What even qualifies as fall? I always get a little salty this time of year because I live in Texas. You just never know what kind of weather you will get here, but short sleeves are definitely a feature of most the autumn months. I mean it's 95 degrees outside today so...yeah. I am sharing ten books I am excited to read this Fall today as part of Top Ten Tuesday hosted by The Artsy Reader Girl. I took a peek at my library holds list and holy good books headed my way! I am excited for each one of these and I hope that enthusiasm is contagious and your TBR list fills up, too! Check out the video above to hear me talk about the books or keep reading to see the books I picked.

The Glass Castle
by Jeanette Walls

This is actually a reread for me, which is pretty rare! But it is also a book that I remember liking A LOT, ummm and that's about it. I remember nothing else about it - plot, nope, characters besides Jeanette, nope. Just generally good feelings about this book and nothing else. So, clearly it made a good first impression and I'm ready to pick it back up and remember why. I never reread books, can't remember the last time I did it, I'm terrible at it, and so I'm excited to give it a try. I'm planning to buddy read this with Jade at Bedtime Bookworm, which makes this reread even more exciting!

A Spark of Light
by Jodi Picoult

Jodi Picoult is an auto read author for me. Every time a new book of hers releases there is always so much buzz and discussion, and to avoid dying from curiosity, I have to pick it up! She usually picks controversial topics and adds her uniquely Picoult spin to them, and this book is definitely typical of her writing style - a gunman attacks a women's clinic. I am also intrigued by the narrative style, as it counts backwards through the hours of the standoff. And while I wasn't a fan of her last book, I am excited to give this one a try!

Under A Dark Sky
by Lori Rader-Day

Fall and thrillers go together like hay rides and apple cider. I just love those spooky dark vibes in October and November, and this new release sounds like it will deliver! The book follows a recently widowed woman named Eden who discovers that her husband booked a trip shortly before his death. She decides to go on the trip to try to break out of her grief and it surprised to find she is sharing a suite with a group of twenty- somethings. When one of the suite mates is murdered they all become suspects. I love this set up for thrillers - the who dun it definitely keeps my attention.

Fruit of the Drunken Tree
by Ingrid Rojas Contreras

I have heard such good things about this book from many of the readers that I follow on Instagram. If you have any Instagram, I definitely recommend the #bookstagram community for recommendations and reviews! Not only is this a coming of age story, which is a favorite, it is also historical fiction based in a time and place I don't read about very often, Columbia during the 1990's. This book is on many "highly anticipated" lists and I'm intrigued to see if it lives up the hype!

Tin Man
by Sarah Winman

Good bye fluff novels of the summer, fall is all about digging into some tougher ideas and feelings. This story follows two young boys that become friends, and find that their friendship grows into something more. The novel then jumps ahead in time with one of the character married to a woman, and the other character missing from his life. The synopsis of this book is certainly intriguing, but this is definitely a book I'm reading for the prose and emotional depth that is promises. Can't wait to pick this one up with a box of tissues, as well!

Attachments
by Rainbow Rowell

It has been too long since I have read a Rainbow Rowell, and this is one of the few I haven't read yet! This book gives me some "The Office" vibes, which I am so excited for - two female employees at a company know that their email is being monitored, but that doesn't stop them from swapping lengthy emails about their life, as good friends do! Lincoln, who reviews the emails, is entertained by their emails, and finds himself falling in love as he reads. I have so much faith in Rainbow and how she will tell this story - SO excited for this one!

Three Things About Elsie
by Joanna Cannon

I haven't heard too much about this book, yet - but the premise sounds really interesting!  The novel follows 84 year old Florence who has fallen and is waiting to be rescued. As she waits, she reflects on her life and thinks about her old friend Elsie, and their shared secret. Intrigue! I'm also interested in this book because the author is a psychologist, which I think may add a unique spin to her writing as she brings that knowledge and experience with human nature to the table. I'll be sure to let you know what I think when I finish this one up!

A Place for Us
by Fatima Farheen Mirza

Another book that had a ton of buzz this summer- and I just haven't gotten a chance to pick it up yet! The holds list for this book is insane. It went on my list in July annnddd I'm still waiting for a copy. Boo. This book was listed as being great to read on the beach, and an excellent summer read - and with the weather in Texas, who knows - maybe I'll be reading it by the beach, too! The book is about family and relationships, so it definitely has some fall vibes as well, either way I can't wait to be off the wait list and have this much anticipated read in my hands!

Less
by Andrew Greer

Another book with an insane waitlist that I have been patiently waiting on, for a while. I am #112 on the waitlist now, so that's encouraging? Basically, this will be a November read...if I'm lucky. I love how well loved this novel has become and how highly rated it is, as well. I have a feeling that there is a good reason the list for this book is so long, and I can't wait for my turn to read it!

Educated
by Tara Westover

What is a list on Girl About Library without another dose of non fiction thrown in? Of course, I have a pick and it is Educated. This book gives me some "Hillbilly Elegy" vibes, which was one of my favorite non fiction reads of 2017. This book has been on the bestseller list for weeks, and while I am patiently waiting for my turn to read it from the library, I'm not sure I'll be able to resist buying it for much longer!

And those are my picks for my fall reading list. Every time I make a list like this I get super excited to read the books that are on it. But it also makes me a little sad for the books that I already have out. It's just hard to focus on your current reads when you are so excited for what's to come. Do you struggle with constantly looking forward to your next read? Let's chat about it below, or let me know how you combat that struggle, too!

  1. I've read quite a few of Jodi Picoult's books and mostly enjoyed them. I also wasn't crazy about her last book, but I might give this one a try!
