Rock Paper Scissors
by Alice Feeney

Things have been wrong with Mr and Mrs Wright for a long time. When Adam and Amelia win a weekend away to Scotland, it might be just what their marriage needs. Self-confessed workaholic and screenwriter Adam Wright has lived with face blindness his whole life. He can’t recognize friends or family, or even his own wife. Every anniversary the couple exchange traditional gifts--paper, cotton, pottery, tin--and each year Adam’s wife writes him a letter that she never lets him read. Until now. They both know this weekend will make or break their marriage, but they didn’t randomly win this trip. One of them is lying, and someone doesn’t want them to live happily ever after. Ten years of marriage. Ten years of secrets. And an anniversary they will never forget.

How Did "Rock Paper Scissors" End?

What was the Twist?

"Rock Paper Scissors" Ending Explained -

There are three main characters in "Rock Paper Scissors" - Adam, Amelia, and Robin. The story of "Rock Paper Scissors" is told through each of their perspectives and also through letters written to Adam that are signed initially as from "Your Wife". The letters begin before her engagement to Adam and then through their marriage up to present day. At the start of the book, Adam and Amelia are going on a trip to try and save their marriage. Amelia states that she won the trip in a raffle at work. While there.a storm moves in trapping them there as they are manipulated and terrorized by Robin, and possibly each other. The book moves pretty fluidly in time, but isn't too difficult to keep track of thanks to the limited number of main characters.

The Twists -

1. The letters are not from Amelia, they are actually from Robin! Who is Robin in "Rock Paper Scissors"? The author wants you to assume that Robin has a mysterious relationship to Adam and Amelia and also that the letters titled "Your Wife" are from Amelia. Robin and Adam were married for ten years. Amelia befriends Robin at work, and then Adam and Amelia have an affair. Robin and Adam divorce and Adam marries Amelia.

2. Robin crated the fake raffle luring Adam and Amelia to the secluded church and cottage so that she could either convince Adam to leave Amelia, or if unsuccessful possibly kill them both.

3. The cottage belongs to Robin / Robin is Henry Winter's daughter. Early in the book it is not clear how the characters ended up at the cottage. Amelia won the trip in a work raffle, but the author made this sound very fishy. Adam comes to recognize some items in the cottage and remembers that they belong to an author he admired and worked with named Henry Winter. As you continue reading you learn that Robin was secretly the daughter of Henry Winter and coordinated Adam working for him.

4. Henry Winter is dead and Robin has been writing novels as her father. When Amelia and Adam come face to face with Robin she admits that she has been impersonating her father. Henry Winter was a recluse and so it was easy to convince others that he was alive. Robin asks Adam to leave Amelia, and Adam chooses to after reading a letter Robin wrote revealing that Amelia was hiding her involvement in Adam's mother's death.

5. Amelia and Adam knew each other as teens. Adam has a condition that causes "facial blindness". He is not able to distinguish between people based on their appearance. When Adam was a teenager, he and Amelia became friends one night and during a joy ride in a stolen vehicle accidentally hit and killed Adam's mom with the car. Adam does not recognize Amelia as the other driver because of his condition.

6. Amelia attempts to kill Adam but Robin saves him by killing Amelia first. Adam confronts Amelia after finding out about her role in the death of his mother, and Amelia snaps attempting to kill Adam. However, Robin stabs Amelia with scissors, killing Amelia. Then, Robin and Adam bury Amelia's body. At the end of the novel, Adam and Robin are remarried and working together. Robin writing novels as though she is her father, and Adam adapting them for film. They are most excited to work together on a novel called "Rock Paper Scissors" a book that Adam wrote before he was first married to Robin.

  2. I don't get how Robin and Adam can get away with it and just remarry and continue living with adapting books. People (friends and relatives) must have asked about Amelia and the old author, where are they etc.. It's simply not possible in these modern times to live as a recluse and never talk with your publisher, your translators and so on.

    1. I’ve been looking for that very explanation! And not yet found it. I assumed her colleagues at Battersea would note her failure to return to work. Adam would have been homicide detective’s 1st (& only!) pit stop. I hope you or I figure this one out!!!

  3. Who whispered, “Samuel, Samuel, Samuel” at the end?

  4. Another twist was that it was actually Adam not Amelia who was illegally driving the ill-fated car night his mother was killed.

  5. I didn't like the ending. They buried Amelia in a shallow grave? And her inhaler was found on the ground? Wouldn't anyone have come looking for her and be suspicious when she didn't return to work? Sounds like Robin and Adam are heading to jail since the detective discovered the grave.

  6. Who was Robin buying baby food for? At one moment, she said she left it out and the plate was clean afterwards? Who was it for?

  7. Why was Henry Winter's tombstone changed to "killer of one"? Who did he kill?

    1. My question also

    2. Robin had blamed her dad, Henry, of her mom’s drowning in bathtub.

    3. Robin killed Amilia. She posed as her Father. That is why the grave also said, “author of many”. Henry never killed anyone.

  8. What about Bob? I am hesitant to continue out of fear that something happened to him

  9. Sam’s chapter leaves us with the realization that Robin is a liar and story seller. I am wondering how much of the letters are true or just fabricated. I was left thinking both women were so f*ed up they were crazy!

  10. Who put the finger with the ring on it on the grave?
